Overview of GATE 2014

Dear Btechallsolutions Readers! Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all India examination administered and conducted Jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordination Board - GATE,Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD),and Government of India.

GATE entrance is compulsory for applying at various jobs in public sector units like IOCL ,ISRO, BARC etc. It is expected to follow same by several Maharatna,Navratna and Miniratna CPSEs.


GATE is conducted through the constitution of eight zones. The zones and the corresponding administrative institutes are: 

Zone-1: Indian Institute of Science Bangalore 
Zone-2: Indian Institute of Technology Bombay 
Zone-3: Indian Institute of Technology Delhi 
Zone-4: Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati 
Zone-5: Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur 
Zone-6: Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur 
Zone-7: Indian Institute of Technology Madras 
Zone-8: Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee


Admission to postgraduate programmes with MHRD and some other Government scholarships/ assistant ships in engineering colleges/institutes is open to those who qualify in GATE examination. GATE qualified candidates with Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology or Master's degree in any branch of Science/ Mathematics/ Computer Applications are eligible for admission to Master's degree programmes in Engineering/Technology/Architecture as well asfor Doctoral programmes in relevant branches of Science with MHRD or other government scholarships/ assistantships. To avail the scholarship, the candidate must secure admission to such a postgraduate programme, as per the prevailing procedure of the admitting institution. However, candidates with Master's degree in Engineering/Technology may seek admission to relevant Doctoral Programmes with scholarship/ assistantship without appearing in the GATE examination

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination administered and conducted in eight zones across the country by the GATE Committee comprising faculty from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordinating Board - GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Governmentof India.
To identify meritorious and motivated candidates for admission to Post Graduate Programmesin Engineering, Technology, Architecture and Pharmacy at the National level. Toserve as benchmark for normalisation of the Undergraduate Engineering Educationin the country.

Eligibility

Thefollowing categories of candidates are eligible to appear for GATE 2014:

  • Bachelor's degree holders in Engineering/Technology/ Architecture (4 years after 10 2) andthose who are in the final year of such programmes.
  • Bachelor's degree holders in Engineering/Technology/Architecture (Post-B.Sc./Post-Diploma)and those who are in the final year of such programmes.
  • Master'sdegree holders in any branch of Science/Mathematics/ Statistics/Computer Applications or equivalent and those who are in the final year of such programmes.
  • Candidatesin the second or higher year of the Four-year Integrated Master's degree programme (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/Technology.
  • Candidates in the fourth or higher year of Five-year Integrated Master's degree programmeor Dual Degree programme in Engineering/Technology.
  • Candidates with qualifications obtained through examinations conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE (e.g. AMIE by Institute of Engineers(India); AMICE by Institute of Civil Engineers (India)) as equivalent toB.E./B.Tech. Those who have completed section A or equivalent of such professional courses are also eligible.

Pattern  of GATE





GATE have the following 21 papers.
Agricultural Engineering, Architecture and Planning ,Civil Engineering , Chemical Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering , Chemistry, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering , Geology & Geophysics, Instrumentation Engineering, Information Technology, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering , Physics, Production & Industrial Engg, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Textile Engg & Fibre Science, Engineering Sciences, Life Sciences.
 
The choice of the appropriate paper is the responsibility of the candidate. However, some guidelines are suggested below :
  • Candidates are expected to appear in a paper appropriate to the discipline of their qualifying degree. However, the candidates are free to choose any paper according to their admission plan, keeping in mind the eligibility criteria of the admitting institute.
  • Candidates have to mark the correct choice by darkening the appropriate bubble against each question on an Objective Response Sheet (ORS).
  • The GATE examination consists of a single paper of 3 hours duration.
  • The question paper of GATE will be fully objective type.
  • There will be negative marking for wrong answers.

Negative Marks for wrong Answer Q.1 to Q.25: 1/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.

Q.26 to Q.55: Will carry two marks each (sub-total 60 marks) 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.

Q.48 through Q.51 (2 pairs) will be common data questions. Each question will carry two marks 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.

Question pairs (Q.52, Q.53) and (Q.54, Q.55) will be linked answer questions. The answer to the second question of the last two pairs will depend on the answer to the first question of the pair. If the first question in the linked pair is wrongly answered or is un-attempted, then the answer to the second question in the pair will not be evaluated. Each question will carry two marks There will be negative marks only for wrong answer to the first question of the linked answer question pair i.e. for Q.52 and Q.54, 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer. There is no negative marking for Q.53 and Q.55.

Q.56 to Q.60 : From General Aptitude (GA) will carry one mark each (sub-total 5 marks). 1/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.

Q.61 to Q.65 : From GA will carry two marks each (sub-total 10 marks) 2/3 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.
