Guide for GATE Exam

So Lets Start :

I asked this same question 2 years back. But no sources provided the right information i actually needed . A bundle of questions headed up in my mind..
Where to start? when to start? coaching necessary? correspondence?
That is the main reason why i am writing this post.. For my fellow juniors who are badly in need of advice..

Introducing myself.. I am a final year civil engineering student. I wrote GATE twice. In my first attempt i couldn't even qualify. That made me realize how strong the goal is. In my second attempt i got AIR 475. Right now i got admission in IIT Madras and IIT Delhi for Geotechnical Engineering, My first choice.. The basic reason why i am writing this is because i know where i went wrong and what could have carried me to better positions..

8 Mantra / Tips to Crack GATE Exam:

1. So let me start off with the basic mantra.. Before reading this blog you must make it clear if GATE is a passion for you.. Maybe GATE is not.! But definitely an IIT could change your life.. So its the first and the most important thing to be focussed. Make your goal clear..

2. If you are damn sure that you want to study in an IIT dont waste an opportunity to write GATE in your third year. It is a perfect platform to know what exactly you have to prepare. I had many friends who were so keen to crack GATE but never wrote GATE in third year just for the sake of saving a Rs1000. And those were the people who suffered heavy loses in the main exam! So if you are financially stable, do give up a try during your third year itself and do at-least a weeks preparation with what all syllabus you have studied till date. This could give you an insight into what exactly the whole system is about.

3. Correspondence course is a good option. Only Text books are required to cover the full syllabus. But correspondence material gives you an upper hand. Most of the materials consist of a theory part and an objective part. This could act as a reference and definitely an objective workbook is necessary to to guide you. It has got a psychological aspect too. These books could motivate you when you are deviating from the goal.
I followed IES made easy materials. It is good for civil. The theory part of structural materials is unique and even-though they are copy-paste, it make up to the standards. The main reason is that, errors are too less compared to any other. Also it has worked-out solutions to key questions.
ACE Academy books are also good. In-fact the objective workbook is the best in this case. It covers wide range of questions. But the main problem is that we will have to solve questions by ourselves.
Elite academy has the maximum number of books and i personally wont suggest any to buy those books. They are made of some old worn out pages and it kills the essence of learning. Also there are many errors.
Also dont rely much on GK Publications book. Some part of the book is really good, like RCS, WRE, Irrigation etc. But some part are the worst like Concrete Technology!

4.Coaching: Coaching is actually not needed. If you have the books and proper mindset to study , there is nothing that can stop you!. But if you are a bit lazy , coaching would ensure that you are on the right track and could even act as a revision class for you

5. MADE EASY PREVIOUS YEAR QUESTION BANK IN GATE:
This is a big key to crack GATE. This is an exclusive fully solved book by made easy. It contains papers from 2003. It cost around 200, but believe me its the most valuable asset!. I made my biggest mistake here. I started solving this book only in my last week preparations and this book helped me score more than anything. Try to be thorough with this book at-least one month prior to the exam. Then you will get ample time for revision.

6. When to start.?
This is the big question. I would say give a minimum of 10 months preparation. Collect all the materials 1 year before exam itself and whenever you get leisure time go through it.

7.What plans helped me?
There are subjects which you have learned in your 2nd and 3rd year. Concentrate on these subjects during the first phase of preparation. Try to collect as many text book as you can from the library. While reading each book dont forget to look at the objective questions given at the end of each chapter. Make a notebook of your own for each subject. This book must be with you while you learn that subject. Note down all the important formulas, short-cuts, theory parts etc..
In the last one month, this book would stand equal to a number of textbooks. Simultaneously go through the correspondence material. In the second phase concentrate more on your final year subjects. While preparing for university exams, try to study from GATE point of view. Complete the entire syllabus before mid-January. Minimum of 4 weeks must be spent for revision

8.MOCK TESTS:
Many institutes conduct mock test. It stats by the end of November. It is the best means of self-evaluation. Try to attend tests which provides a nation wide ranking. Look in www.examcrazy.com for more details. After attending each test check your marks and position. Then go for a detailed solution of the paper and check the solutions for questions you didn't know and those went wrong. Note down these too in the notebook.

The month of February should be used for revision alone. The last 4 days before exam should be used to revise the entire subjects you studied. The notebooks you made and Madeeasy previous papers should be thorough by this time. And then you are set for the exam.. And note please.. those 3 hours count a lot! Try to concentrate maximum and drink water! All de best .:)
