The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all India examination administered and conducted jointly by the IISc (Indian Institute of Science) and the seven IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) on behalf of the National Coordination Board – GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. Here are some important things to know about the GATE exam.
GATE aspirants should first check whether they meet with the GATE eligibility criteria. Only the following categories of candidates are eligible to appear for the GATE exam.

GATE Eligibility: Certificate from the Principal

Candidates who have to submit a certificate from their Principal, as determined from the above table, need to obtain a signature from their Principal on a certificate that will be printed on the application PDF file provided only after the completion of online application submission. Therefore, this cannot be scanned and uploaded online.

GATE Eligibility: For Candidates with Backlogs

Candidates who have appeared in the final semester/year exam, but with a backlog (arrears/failed subjects) in any of the papers in their qualifying degree should submit the following documents to be eligible to appear for the GATE exam.
  1. A copy of any one of the mark sheets of the final year, OR
  2. A letter from the Principal indicating that the student has a backlog from an earlier semester/year to be cleared, and therefore cannot produce a course completion certificate now. This certificate will also be present in the last portion of the PDF application form provided to you after you submit the application online.
