History
Dr. Alagappa Chettiar and his ambitions
Dr. R.M. Alagappa Chettiar, a man of rare wisdom and forethought,
founded Alagappa Chettiar Educational Trust with the sole aim of
developing the backward area of Karaikudi into a centre for higher
education and provided necessary funds for the establishment of
educational institutions.
On the occasion of laying of the foundation stone of the Central Electro Chemical Research Institute by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 25th July 1948, Dr. Alagappa Chettiar in his welcome address said It is my hope to start an Engineering college immediately. A college which God and the University of Madras willing will start functioning with Civil Engineering by the academic year 1949 .
Historic Foundation
In 1952, Dr. Alagappa Chettiar s dream came true. Alagappa Chettiar
College of Engineering and Technology started functioning from 21st July
1952 with three faculties- Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and
Electronics Engineering.
The Foundation tablet for the main building of the college was laid by
Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the then President of India on 19th February 1953.
Before Dr. Alagappa Chettiar could bring all his dreams into reality,
he passed away.
Government Engineering College
In 1966, the institution was handed over to the Government of Tamil
Nadu. In 1969, a new faculty Electronics and Communication Engineering
was started. Further part-time courses in Civil, Mechanical and
Electrical and Electronics Engineering were introduced in 1971. M.E in
Microwave and Optical Engineering and Master of Computer Applications
(MCA) were started in 1983 and 1988 respectively. Since 2001, B.E in
Computer Science and Engineering is also offered.
M.E Optical Communication, M.E Computer Aided Design, M.E Manufacturing Engineering, M.E Environmental Engineering, M.E Power Electronics and Drive are offered from 2002-03 along with part-time B.E course in Electronics and Communication Engineering
Autonomous Status
Anna University, Tiruchirappalli has granted autonomous status to the
college from the academic year 2009-10.
The college is affiliated to Anna University, Tiruchirappalli from
2007-08. The college has also been recognized as a research centre and
about 80 scholars are pursuing their research.
The college celebrated its Golden Jubilee during the academic year
2002-03
Technical Developments
This college has been selected by the World Bank to participate in the
Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) and Rs. 15.667
crores has been sanctioned as programme life allocation by National
Project Implementation Unit, Government of India. An amount of 6 crore
has been incurred towards the purchase of sophisticated equipment and
instruments for various departments. Campuswide networking has been
completed at a cost of Rs. 1.25 crores.
Infrastructure Developments
Building works for various departments have been completed at cost of
Rs. 80 lakhs. Instrument facilities like XRD and SEM are offered to the
researchers in and around Karaikudi at a cheaper rate.
In commemoration of the Golden Jubilee of the college the Old Boys Association ACCETOBA constructed a well-equipped block for organizing symposia and seminar at a cost of about Rs. 37 lakhs purely with donations from the Alumni of this college.
A massive arch at the entrance has been constructed by Alumni of 1982 batch during their Silver Jubilee Meet at a cost of around Rs. 4.5 lakhs. Alumni of 1984 have constructed and donated a PG hostel worth Rs. 35 lakhs to the college as part of their Silver Jubilee reunion. Alumni of 1984 have donated a mineral water plant to the institution during their Silver Jubilee reunion.
NBA Accreditation
The college got the accreditation by NBA (National Board of
Accreditation) for the following branches during 2004-05.
Mechanical Engineering (5 years), Civil Engineering (3 years),
Electrical and Electronics Engineering (3 years), Electronics and
Communication Engineering (3 years).
Best Engineering College
The college has been declared as the Best Engineering College of Tamil Nadu in the year 2007.
