IIT-D Joins Rebel league,plans to hold separate test
IIT- Delhi on Thursday rejected HRD minister Kapil Sibal's proposal of single entrance test for all central engineering institutes and announced its own entrance exam from next year.
IIT-D would hold the test on the pattern of the 2012 joint entrance examination (JEE). A committee would be formed to coordinate and conduct the test jointly with the other IITs. Delhi is the second IIT after Kanpur to plan its own entrance procedure.
Criticising the new formula which gives weightage to class 12 marks - Dr. Sanjeev Sanghi, President of the IIT-D Faculty Forum, said; ' What was the need to rush and introduce changes in the JEE from 2013?"
Somnath Bharti, president of the IIT-D Alumni Association, said the institute had been pushed to think of a separate exam because of the Government's autocratic and manipulative attitude.
Prof AK Chaturvedi, spokes person for the IIT-Kanpur Senate, said IIT-Delhi had taken the right step. "We look forward to jointly conducting the 2013 exam with other IIT's in the same format as JEE 2012, Chaturvedi Said.
Sources said even IIT-Kharagpur, which will hold an emergency senate meeting next week, may go for a separate exam. IIT-Bombay's senate meets on July 5.
